The SLG720 operates on the principle of Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). The transmitter sends a low-energy microwave pulse down a probe (the guide). When the pulse reaches the surface of the liquid, a portion of the energy is reflected back to the electronics. The device measures the time-of-flight to determine the distance to the product surface. Because the pulse is physically guided by a probe, the signal is much more focused and less susceptible to interference from tank internals or foam compared to non-contact radar systems. It features a modular design with a standard alphanumeric display and high-pressure/high-temperature capabilities.

Important Considerations and Precautions

When installing the SLG720, the No-Fly Zone or clearance around the probe must be respected; if the probe is installed too close to a metal wall or agitator, "ghost echoes" may occur, leading to false readings. For Coaxial Probes, ensure the liquid is clean, as slurries or viscous liquids can clog the space between the inner and outer rods.

It is also vital to check the Compatibility of the Probe Material (typically 316 Stainless Steel or Hastelloy) with the chemical properties of the process medium to prevent corrosion. During commissioning, users should perform a Background Subtraction (mapping) to tell the device to ignore static reflections from internal tank structures. Finally, ensure that the Cable Tension on flexible probes is maintained if a weight is used, as a slack cable can lead to measurement errors or mechanical damage to the probe.
