The PHOENIX CPU, officially classified as the AMD Ryzen 7040 series mobile APU, is a landmark system-on-chip designed for modern compact and mobile computing ecosystems. First announced at CES 2023, it marks AMD’s first full integration of the latest Zen 4 CPU architecture and RDNA 3 graphics architecture on a single monolithic die, breaking away from the long-standing industry practice of pairing new CPU cores with outdated integrated graphics architectures. This SoC follows AMD’s earlier Van Gogh and Rembrandt generations, and it has been codenamed internally as “Pink Sardine” during its development phase. It was officially launched to the market in May 2023, with a full lineup of 7040U series processors covering configurations from 4 cores up to 8 cores to fit different tiered product positioning.

The entire PHOENIX series is fabricated using TSMC’s advanced N4 manufacturing process, with a total die area of only 178 square millimeters and over 25.4 billion transistors packed inside. Its CPU section features a full cluster of 8 Zen 4 cores, paired with a customized high-speed cache setup that delivers 16MB of total L3 cache, with each core allocated 2MB of dedicated L3 slice to optimize die space utilization. The integrated graphics unit adopts the latest RDNA 3 architecture, with the top-tier configuration offering 12 compute units for graphics-intensive workloads. Beyond core CPU and GPU components, the SoC is embedded with multiple specialized hardware accelerators: an XDNA AI engine optimized for machine learning inference, a dedicated audio signal processing controller that offloads audio tasks from the main CPU, and a high-performance video processing engine that supports modern video encoding and decoding standards. The entire chip is packaged in a 25×35 mm BGA form factor, which maintains full mechanical compatibility with the packaging footprint of AMD’s previous-generation Rembrandt SoC.

Product Precautions

The 16MB L3 cache configuration of the PHOENIX CPU is different from the 32MB full-spec L3 design used on standard desktop Zen 4 processors, which may result in slightly higher memory access latency when running very heavy multi-threaded workloads that demand large cache capacity. The 25×35 mm BGA packaging is designed for professional automated surface-mount assembly only; any attempt at manual soldering, reballing or physical modification of the package will almost certainly cause permanent irreversible damage to the internal die. Users should also note that the operating frequency of the mobile PHOENIX CPU is calibrated lower than full-power desktop Zen 4 chips, so the actual measured cache latency will be marginally higher than that of high-frequency desktop Zen 4 processors, even though the underlying cache architecture is identical. It is also critical to install official validated driver packages for the integrated RDNA 3 GPU and XDNA accelerator, as mismatched third-party drivers may cause system instability or prevent the dedicated accelerators from functioning at full performance.
